Comparison between LG Optimus 2X and Motorola Atrix

Friday January 21, 2011

The Tegra 2-powered LG Optimus 2X and Motorola Atrix are the first two dual-core smartphones we’ve seen.

Body and build
They’re slim by 2010 standards, but compared to forthcoming super-slim substitute like the LG Optimus Black and Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, they’d get laughed off the bridge. The Atrix is 10.1mm thick, while the Optimus 2X is 10.9mm.

As such, they’re similar in size to the current top Android pick, the Google Nexus S, and considerably slimmer than the HTC Desire HD and Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. Both phones weigh around 130g, but Motorola Atrix wins a bonus point for hardiness, using a Gorilla Glass display.

Software
Android 2.3 Gingerbread has arrived in the Google Nexus S, but no manufacturers seem to know if they’re mobiles will be able to play ball with the new software.

The LG Optimus 2X and Motorola Atrix are being publicized as running Android 2.2 Froyo, with a Gingerbread update planned for release soon after.

Camera
The camera is the one feature that the Motorola Atrix doesn’t try desperately to outdo its rivals with. Bearing a 5-megapixel sensor, the Motorola Atrix is outdone by many top Androids, including the 8-megapixel LG Optimus 2X.

The LG Optimus 2X has the potential to change all that though. The LED flash is no Xenon, but with 1080p video capture available, this could become the best Android snapper yet.

Screen
Torch-bearers of the 4-inch revolution of 2011, wearers of skinny jeans had better get used to dealing with a big bulge in their pockets if they want one of these Android workhorses. The screens are exactly the same size, four inches a pop exactly, but look closer and these two displays are very different.

They both use standard TFT LCD displays, but where the LG Optimus 2X’s screen boasts 384,000 pixels, the Motorola Atrix offers a massive 518,400 — almost as many as the iPhone 4. The Atrix’s screen will appear sharper and more detailed, but all those extra pixels won’t necessarily make apps look any better, as the vast majority of current Android apps are designed for phones with screens of 854×480 pixels, max. The Atrix’s screen has 960×540 pixels.

Power
The first two dual-core Android phones on the scene, the Tegra 2 chipset is at the heart of the LG Optimus 2X and Motorola Atrix. Let’s get this straight — this means that both these phones are ridiculously powerful, but the Motorola Atrix has an ace up its sleeve that acts as a final power injection.

It has 1GB of RAM, where the LG Optimus 2X reportedly has 512MB. RAM is the grease that keeps the cogs of a phone moving, and will speed-up everyday navigation a shade, and will also come in handy when dealing with data-intensive tasks and gaming. There’s currently nothing out there in the Android app scene that’ll make full use of 1GB of RAM though.
