Y’know what, as much as I whinge and moan about Nintendo (because I hate the Wii… with a passion… and no, not just because my mum beat me at Wii Tennis), I at least admire them for doing their console differently to everyone else. It’s the same as me having a soft spot for the Nintendo DS (without actually owning or intending to ever own one)for bringing in touchscreen-y shenanigans to handheld gaming, instead of just relying on the past successes of the Gameboy, and doing more of the same.
But here’s the thing: in the handheld gaming world, a lot of people are saying the iPhone is the bee’s knees, and various other presumably pleasant bits of other animals, so is the DS on its way to being kicked off the throne? Should they worried about Apple, since even big game developers like EA and Activision are coding stuff for the iPhone now?
Well, according to Gamesbeat, in an interview with Nintendo’s executive VP of sales and marketing, Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo don’t give a monkey’s about Apple. And to be fair, they may well be right. Consider the sales figures for the two. The various iPhones, in just under 3 years, have sold a total of around 42 million units. The various incarnations of the Nintendo DS, however (in the space of just under 6 years), have sold around 125 million units. So, nearly twice as long on sale, but nearly three times the actual number of units sold. And yes, I know that doesn’t include how many iPod Touches were sold in the same period, but that’s not a phone, so I don’t care about it. Besides, while it will skew the figures more in Apple’s favour, I bet it doesn’t let Apple beat Nintendo. If anyone can be bothered to find the figures, please feel free to prove me wrong in the comments…
